12 BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION

A barrier to communication is something that keeps meanings from meeting. Meaning barriers exist between all people, making communication much more difficult than most people realize. It is false to assume that if one can talk, then one can also communicate. The following barriers are common methods of communication used in conversation. Can you recognize any of the "dirty dozen" as your conversation habit?

JUDGING

  • criticizing
  • name calling
  • diagnosing
  • praising evaluatively

  • SENDING SOLUTIONS

  • ordering
  • threatening
  • moralizing
  • excessive/inappropriate questioning
  • advising

  • AVOIDING THE OTHER'S CONCERN

  • diverting
  • logical argument
  • reassuring

  • DEFINITIONS:

Judging – To approve or disapprove of a person's behavior

Sending Solutions – The solutions may be sent clearly as advice, indirectly by questioning, authoritatively as an older, aggressively as a threat, or with a halo around them as moralizing. Sending a solution often compounds a problem and creates a new problem.

Avoiding the Other's Concerns – These barriers focus on redirecting a conversation – getting off track.

"My little girl had grown into a complete stranger. I couldn't talk to her, she wouldn't listen to me and she screamed that she hated me. One day she was gone. We found her and then we found Project Return, where she lived until she was able to find herself. In the process, I found my daughter again. If the door had not been open at the house on North Compo, she might be wandering the streets of New York, or worse."
